The Intruder Said He Was Sent by Sienna’s Dead Father
Sienna tightened the hold on the intruder’s arm.
“Who sent you?”
The bearded man stopped struggling.
“Your father did.”
Sienna’s father had died in a car accident eighteen years earlier.
She searched the man and found no identification, only a floor plan of her house and a photograph of an older man entering a train station. Despite his gray hair and beard, Sienna recognized her father’s eyes. The photograph was three weeks old.
The intruder called himself Caleb Voss. He claimed Sienna’s father had ordered him to recover a steel box hidden behind a basement wall panel. Voss had been told the house would be empty. When Sienna appeared, he believed she was another operative searching for it.
Sienna restrained him to the staircase and went downstairs.
Behind the panel, she found a steel container covered in dust. Inside was an FBI file dated years before she joined the Bureau. It identified ten-year-old Sienna as “Witness Seven” in Operation Nightglass.
Her father had never been an accountant. He was an undercover agent investigating a network that sold protected witnesses’ identities. When his cover was exposed, the Bureau reported him dead and erased his history.
Then Sienna found a page identifying Voss as the specialist suspected of revealing her father’s location.
She rushed upstairs. A broken restraint hung from the staircase. Voss had used her to find the box.
Inside the file was an encrypted drive. The moment Sienna removed it, her phone received a video.
Her father appeared on the screen, older but unmistakably alive.
“Sienna, listen carefully,” he said. “Voss is not the man you should fear. The people who buried me are inside the Bureau. Trust no one who knows about Nightglass.”
A crash came from downstairs.
The basement door slowly opened, but Voss was no longer alone.
Sienna closed the file and stepped into the darkness. For eighteen years she had mourned her father. Now she knew he was alive—and that the people who erased him had finally come for her.
